Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be…babies!

For my friend, B — who understands that there are much, much worse things than cowboys 🙂

Men now aren’t easy to love and they’re harder to hold
They’re plenty good-looking enough, but their hearts are all cold
They play games aplenty, and I don’t mean Xbox
And all say that they’re “drama-free”
But they’ve got more drama than even my mama
And it’s quite confusing for me

Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be…babies
Don’t pet ’em, absolve ’em, or let ’em whine much
Let ‘em be lovers and fighters and such
Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be babies
They won’t love another like they love their mother
if you don’t make ‘em grow up.

Men with Madonna-whore complexes and standards
for beauty that few can attain,
all say they want “smart,” but their bullshit’s an art form
they’re not watching porn for the brains
They’ll pull out their victim cards, make up excuses
for why they don’t have love that’s true
Cowards are raised by enabling Mamas —
Mamas, you know not what you do…

Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be babies
Don’t let ‘em be lazy, or stupid, or slow
Let ‘em be more about substance than show
Mama’s don’t let your babies grow up to be babies
They’ll never act right, and they won’t see the light —
Even for someone they “love”

Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be babies!
Don’t cosign their bullshit and let ‘em be lame
Let courage and independence be their aim!
Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be babies!
They’ll never leave home and be always alone
‘cause they’ll all know fuck-all ‘bout love!

  1. OMG… and I don’t OMG too often. This parody was spot on. I was just telling a friend about how I read somewhere on the internet about a mother buying her son a “hoodie” and I could tell from the context that the boy was at least 14 or 15 years old. At that age, it’s too late to buy them any article of clothing that ends in “ie”. (nor can they use sipp’ie’ cups at that age).

Mothers have a lot of sway in this area. (A lot of these statements could also be extended to females as well…but maybe that’s an entirely different song.)

I’m kind of depressed about the youth right now because I substitute teach and they scribble on their papers with magic markers like two year olds (HS freshmen). Meanwhile Euro and Eastern students are learning multiple languages.

Some things are going to have to change.
